The most controversial chalk hill figure in Britain is one that can still be seen today, wielding a club and clearly very naked. The Cerne Abbas figure in Dorset has been displaying his assets for at least 500 years and fertility rites and rituals are still carried out on his member today. The mighty effigy is rich in mythology. Near the giant, a sarsen stone marks the spot where two local titans once had a rock throwing competition. Legend tells of a real giant, a Danish one, who terrorised the district till he ate a number of sheep in Blackmoor and lay down on the hillside to sleep. The peasants beheaded him, and cut the outline around the body as a warning to other giants. Other stories say he sometimes awakens to drink from the stream or devour maidens and cooks them in his frying pan (Trendle earthwork looks like a square frying pan above the figure). He also partook in local games with villagers and even acted as referee. He strode between hills and gazed at the setting sun, suggesting his affinity with astronomy and the movement of the stars.
